Former nursing home executive accused of plot to hide injuries

Larry Hinman, who from 1997 to 2003 was regional director at Care Initiatives, the largest nursing home chain in Iowa, was indicted recently by a federal grand jury. Federal prosecutors allege that Hinman ordered employees to conceale residents’ injuries from inspectors. Hinman was in charge of supervising nursing home administrators and monitoring state health inspections at nursing homes within his region of Iowa. Indictments of abuse and neglect usually focus on front-line caregivers; state officials believe Hinman is the first corporate-level nursing home official in Iowa to face criminal charges for allegations regarding resident care.

Last August, a grand jury indicted two registered nurses who worked at Care Initiatives’ Indian Hills nursing home in Sioux City. Since then, the indictment has been revised to name Hinman as a co-defendant. All three defendants are accused of conspiracy, obstruction of a federal audit and four counts of making false statements to federal officials.
Hinman’s lawyer, William Smith, said Thursday that the family of the injured 84-year-old resident was notified shortly after she fell from a chair in June 1999. He said there is no allegation that his client contributed to the accident.
