Bill to Put Video Cameras in Nursing Homes Fails
Tuesday, April 12th, 2005.
Little Rock (AP) - A bill by Republican Representative Stephen Bright of Maumelle, died in the Senate, ending hopes, at least for the moment, that video cameras would be authorized for use in rooms at nursing homes. The bill had previously passed the House 82-to-two.
The bill was intended to prevent abuse in nursing homes and is named for Willie Mae Ryan, an 81-year-old Dallas County Nursing Home resident who was beaten to death with brass knuckles in 2003.
The bill was three votes short of passage with thirteen senators not voting. Senator Mary Ann Salmon, a Democrat from North Little Rock, who carried the bill in the Senate, said she might bring it back for another vote.
