Byrne advocates ‘grannycams’; Lieutenant-governor hopeful wants nursing homes to permit them

Richmond, VA – Democrat Leslie L. Byrne wants nursing home residents or their guardians to be able to install so-called “grannycams” in their rooms to monitor their care.

Byrne, who’s running for lieutenant governor, outlined her plan yesterday afternoon at the Linwood Robinson Senior Center in Church Hill. The proposal resembles a bill that Byrne, a former state senator from Fairfax, introduced in the General Assembly two years ago. The bill ultimately died.

Byrne described her plan as providing “new and needed protections against neglect and abuse in nursing homes.” Under her proposal, residents or their families could have the option of installing electronic surveillance equipment in their rooms, which they would pay for. If residents are medically incapable of making an informed decision, their guardians would be able to.

i am in the process of starting a petition online for placement of video cameras in nursing homes i am looking for recent statistics on nursing home abuse i know the numbers have to be horrific if u could lead me in the right direction to find those statistics i would deeply appreciate it thank u
