Protecting Yourself and Loved Ones from Elder Abuse

KY - Due to medical advances and better health habits, we as a society are living longer than our grandparents. The problem many face is that they are living longer, but spending much of this time dependent and in poor health. This dependency makes the elderly a perfect target for abuse.

Kentucky has approximately 6,000 reports of elder abuse a year. Those 75 and older are abused at two to three times the rate of the general population of the elderly. Perhaps not surprisingly, women represent 60 to 70 percent of those abused. The elderly most at risk are those who cannot live independently, are cognitively impaired, are financially dependent on the abusers and are socially isolated.
