Complaint count up on nursing home care; The number in Iowa increased 34 percent in the last fiscal year

DesMoines, IA – State officials say care-facility complaints during the fiscal year that ended in June 2005 were up 34 percent from 2004 – the biggest one-year gain in at least five years.

Industry officials say care in Iowa homes is improving. Dana Petrowsky of the Iowa Association of Homes and Services for the Aging said homes are “over-reporting” suspected abuse, in part because of a new law requiring faster reporting. Self-reporting by homes accounted for 56 percent of all complaints in 2005 .

However, state officials say they have not seen an increase in invalid complaints, which would be the natural result of over-reporting. The percentage of complaints that are substantiated has remained constant in recent years, hovering around 33 percent.
