Caregivers face little screening

The case of a Wilmington nurse aide convicted of choking his wife into unconsciousness highlights how North Carolina’s screening system falls short in weeding out potentially violent caregivers, even those with criminal backgrounds.

North Carolina maintains a registry of unlicensed health care providers that includes information about abuse or neglect in health care facilities. But, by law, the registry doesn’t include criminal background check information on incidents that occur outside a facility.
