Report IDs roots of elderly neglect: Understaffing — a problem in Indiana — can endanger nursing-home residents

Fort Wayne, IN – A national report examining nursing home abuse and neglect, released Friday, reveals understaffing as the underlying reason for continued problems.
“The Faces of Neglect: Behind the Closed Doors of Nursing Homes,” commissioned by the National Citizens Coalition for Nursing Home Reform, gives a look-back at the events and conditions surrounding 36 residents of long-term care facilities in 12 states.
While Indiana was not one of the 12, “What struck me is that you could change the name of the state, put in Indiana, and it could be the story of what happens here as well,” said Robyn Grant, long-term care policy director for the statewide senior advocacy group United Senior Action. She has worked on behalf of Hoosier nursing-home residents since 1990.
