Sex abuse penalties criticized: If no injury results, state law doesn’t permit the leveling of a dependent-adult abuse charge

Des Moines, IA – Last month, after Lesley Polek of Grinnell was accused of sexually abusing elderly residents in an Iowa nursing home, she pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay two $50 fines.
That punishment doesn’t sit well with some advocates for seniors.
“It’s just appalling,” said Iowa Long-Term Care Ombudsman Jeanne Yordi. “It is extremely sad that our older Iowans, our most vulnerable population, are not worth more than that. I just find that really sad.”
