Program gives nursing home residents an advocate

San Mateo, CA – The little-known office of Ombudsman Services of San Mateo County investigated 2,125 complaints last fiscal year in long-term care facilities for the elderly and disabled and found 304 cases of abuse. The office relies on a crew of more than 40 volunteers (and is seeking to recruit 20 more). The volunteers spent nearly 5,400 hours last year checking up on 438 facilities.
Staff writer Rebekah Gordon sat down to talk with Tippy Irwin, the executive director of Ombudsman Serivces since 2001, to talk about what her office, mandated under the Older Americans Act, does for the nearly 9,000 county residents in long-term care and the realities of elder abuse.
