Nursing home lapses precede killing; Request to examine suspect fizzles out

New Orleans, LA - About 36 hours before Bernice Mayeaux was killed at a Mandeville nursing home, staff members had decided to seek a psychiatric evaluation of her roommate, Karolina Glover, 71, whom police say bludgeoned Mayeaux, 95, with a metal drawer handle.
But Pontchartrain Health Care Center failed to get in touch with a doctor, and that failure is one of several deficiencies cited by the state Department of Health and Hospitals in a recently released report.
