Incident brings elder abuse into spotlight

Wilkes-Barre, PA - Two local examples of the alleged maltreatment of elderly people by nursing home staff bring to light the problem of elder abuse.

“Obviously, any abuse is unacceptable. The frequency of abuse would surprise some people,” Pennsylvania Department of Aging Spokesman Kirk Wilson said.

The most recent report from the state Older Adult Protective Services reveals that in Luzerne County, there were 523 reports of elder abuse in 2004-2005. Of those, 188 cases were substantiated. In 2003-2004, there were 578 reports, 173 of which had merit, and in 2002-2003 there were 734 reports, 241 substantiated.
