Response: Nursing home faces $250,000 in fines

Birmingham, AL – Under the federal Older Americans Act, every state is required to have an ombudsman program that addresses complaints and advocates for improvements in the long-term-care system. The Alabama Department of Senior Services (334-242-5743) operates the ombudsman program. The ombudsman should be contacted about violations of a patient’s rights; physical, verbal or mental abuse; poor quality of care, including inadequate personal hygiene and slow response to requests for assistance; and inappropriate use of chemical or physical restraints.
