Reported elder abuse on the rise in Santa Cruz County

Santa Cruz, CA - Reports of financial elder abuse in Santa Cruz County have spiked this year, after a law took effect Jan. 1 requiring bank tellers to report suspect behavior.

Local staff with the state’s Adult Protective Services already have restored or prevented $36.5 million in the past year, following a 13 percent rise in financial elder abuse cases. Even more money is expected to be recovered.
