Care home death highlights holes in system

Scranton, PA - About the only people at [Peggy Rogers]’s funeral Nov. 9 were the ones investigating her death….

Medical experts say if Dr. Salko had examined her as he claimed, he could not have missed a malignant tumor in her right breast that caused a deformity and a 2.5-centimeter oozing sore that later developed.

Ms. Rogers’ death, caused by the cancer that spread to her lungs, liver and bones, represents a vast failure of a system designed to protect people like her. Unfortunately, she is not alone.

A special report by The Philadelphia Inquirer in February detailed 55 suspicious or preventable deaths that have occurred at assisted living facilities across the state since 2000. Countless other residents have been abused or neglected, the report said.
