Elder Abuse: A Silent Problem

>Des Moines, IA - It is one of the most under-recognized social problems in America: abuse of the elderly. Experts say, 84% of cases go unreported and 90% of the time, the victim’s children are to blame. Advocates say, here in Iowa, there is reason to worry: our state is ranked fourth in the nation when it comes to the number of people 65 and older. As more seniors choose to stay out of nursing facilities and in their own homes, experts say, Iowa is not equipped to handle the growing problem of abuse.

They are the lonely, the vulnerable, the trusting. They are the easy targets. “Its sad. You become de-sensitized. And its sad because you realize that photo that you saw that was really bad, is commonplace,” says John Judisch, an assistant Polk County attorney, focused almost entirely on abuse of the elderly: physical and financial. “As more and more people realize something can be done, they’re coming out of the woodwork,” Judisch says.
