Grassley: Performance-based bonuses to care facilities need to be explained

The newspaper said 428 of Iowa’s nursing homes are participating in a state program that boosts the amount of Medicaid money they collect for resident care if they score well on certain “accountability measures.”
The Register’s analysis of the program shows that last year, 23 Iowa homes faced large fines for the abuse or neglect of seniors. Of those 23 homes, 16 are now collecting performance-based bonuses from the Medicaid program. Two of the homes that will collect bonuses this year are on a federal list of the worst nursing homes in the nation.
