Hold all caregivers to same standard

Des Moines, IA - The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals regulates nursing homes and can pursue dependent-adult abuse charges against workers in these homes. If a caregiver sexually abuses or steals from a resident, the state agency can take action. But the inspections department cannot pursue abuse charges against a worker in an assisted-living center, elder group home or adult day care - even though the agency regulates them, too. Complaints about abuse in those facilities are made to another agency: the Iowa Department of Human Services.

That doesn’t make sense, and Inspections and Appeals knows it. So it’s pushing House Study Bill 729, which would give it authority to investigate abuse charges in the senior facilities it regulates. Iowa lawmakers should support the change.
