3 indicted in nursing home case; Alleged neglect – Officials say workers dropped a resident, breaking her legs, then withheld medical care

Portland, OR – Three former employees of a Northeast Portland nursing home have been criminally accused of failing to summon help for a 60-year-old resident who suffered two broken legs when she was dropped.

Five days passed in fall 2006 before Linda J. Ober was transported to the hospital, where she died the next day. A wrongful death lawsuit filed last December against Gateway Care and Retirement Center accuses unidentified employees of dropping Ober on the floor as they were using a lift to move her from a wheelchair to a bed. The suit also claims workers ignored her pleas for help by trying to persuade her she hadn’t fallen but simply "had a bad dream."
