Nursing home to lose federal funding

Canton, OH - From humble beginnings, [Smith Healthcare Center] was the first black-owned nursing home in Stark County. It was the only family-owned center of its kind in Canton. It was a place residents got home-cooked meals and personal care.
On May 21, the federal government will stop funding the nursing home. That means it will stop paying bills for residents on Medicaid (assistance for the poor) or Medicare (assistance for senior citizens)….
Shutting off tax dollars was a last resort — Smith has been socked by inspectors with repeated and ongoing violations related to the care and safety of patients in the last several years.
