Make records public on care-giver abuse

Des Moines, IA - Iowans have lost jobs for posting cartoons in the workplace and stealing from the till. In one unemployment case, a worker was allegedly mooning his co-workers. If workers file for unemployment benefits, Iowa Workforce Development makes the records public, thousands of them each year. Some of the stories end up in the Register.

But if the Iowan filing for unemployment worked in a nursing home and beat up an elderly person, the story may not make it to the pages of this newspaper. If an allegation of abuse is confirmed, an administrative law judge at Workforce Development will seal information about the case. That includes the name of the employer, employee, recordings of the hearings and exhibits submitted during the hearing. At least that is what’s been happening under a new interpretation of a 17-year-old law.
