Marin forum on preventing elder abuse

San Rafael, CA - Determining whether a parent, a patient or an elderly acquaintance is capable of making informed financial, medical or societal decisions can be difficult, but a San Rafael neuropsychologist said it is becoming increasingly important to be able to assess seniors.

A. Michael Wolfe spoke Wednesday at a training session for elder financial abuse investigators and others at a forum sponsored by the Financial Abuse Specialist Team, a program of the Elder Financial Protection Network, a San Francisco organization that was established in Novato.

He said that as Marin ages, law enforcement officials, medical professionals and social service workers can expect to face difficult situations and decisions. He noted that as many as 90 percent of nursing home residents suffer significant mental disorders, such as delirium, dementia and depression.
