Vets home complaints spark probes

Daytona Beach, FL - In less than a year, dozens of [Emory L. Bennett Veterans Nursing home] employees have quit. Complaints by a staffer, nursing home residents and their families and friends have been filed with U.S. Rep. John Mica, R-Winter Park, the Police Department and the State Attorneys Office.

The home is currently under investigation by the state Department of Children & Families, the Agency for Health Care Administration and the Department of Veterans Affairs. None of the agencies will discuss the complaints because investigations are ongoing.

Some residents are unhappy. Some employees are uncomfortable. Some volunteers have been made to feel unwelcome. And the newly appointed home administrator, Belkis Pineyro-Wiggins, a former Navy corpswoman, is trying to address all the concerns.
