When Nursing Homes Can — And Can’t — Evict Patients

New York, NY - If you’re in a nursing home, federal law says you can only be evicted for a few reasons — if you can’t pay the bill, if you’re well enough to go home, if you’re endangering the safety of others, that sort of thing.
But some state officials say nursing homes have been turning out patients who are too costly, too inconvenient or whose Medicaid coverage doesn’t pay as much as private insurance, the WSJ reports.
Complaints about nursing-home discharges doubled over a decade, to 8,500 nationally in 2006, the article says. In DC, officials contest about one in seven evictions as improper.
