Law spurs reports of elder abuse; one person cited for alleged failure

Colorado More than 3,800 reports of suspected elder abuse in Colorado have been gathered since a new law went into effect this summer, and one person, a nurse in Douglas County, has been cited for allegedly failing to make a report. As of July 1, a wide range of professionals — including nurses, chiropractors, law enforcement officers, dentists, nursing home staff and home health care workers — are compelled by law to report any suspected abuse or exploitation of anyone 70 and older. If a report is not made to local law enforcement within 24 hours of discovery, the person who failed to call is cited with a misdemeanor.
