A former male nursing assistant at Walker Methodist Health Center in Minneapolis pleaded guilty Monday to abusing an 83-year-old woman who suffered from severe dementia and Alzheimer’s disease — the latest in a recent surge of abuse cases involving elderly residents at nursing homes across the state.

The complaints, signed by township Detective Peter Ricciardi, charge that Mangona on Aug. 5 attempted to cause or did cause bodily injury to an institutionalized elderly person by slapping the patient’s hands and grabbing and squeezing the patient’s mouth. The complaint did not identify the gender or age of the patient, identified only as M.F.

Two local nursing homes are now under the microscope of law enforcement. But, the Attorney General’s office is still releasing little details about their probe into an east Erie elderly care facility.

A recent study in Ohio estimates more than 105,200 seniors are abused, neglected, or financially exploited each year with about 300 of those occurring in Van Wert County, but those who work with seniors advise those numbers are conservative estimates.
Thursday the 17th
A Maplesville woman who faces charges for abuse and neglect of a resident at Hatley Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Clanton pleaded not guilty. Katherine Blevins Lenoir, 53, a former employee of a Chilton County nursing home faces charges for abuse and/or neglect of a female resident of the facility.
Monday the 14th
A Kansas nurse who pleaded guilty to mistreating an adult at an Andover nursing home faces 60 days in jail. KWCH reports Geofrey Nyangweso pleaded guilty to mistreating a dependent adult at Victoria Falls Skilled Nursing Home in Andover in 2013. He was sentenced Thursday.
Thursday the 10th
Lenoir, who is a licensed practical nurse, inadvertently administered a large dose of a narcotic pain medication to a patient instead of the requested cough medicine.
